Mont Saint-Michel Abbey
Discover one of the wonders of medieval architecture.
Christian Mecca
Since the Middle Ages, the Mont has been one of the greatest shrines in Christendom, and every year millions of pilgrims flock to the abbey at its highest point. Long before the arrival of the first Benedictines, Mont Saint-Michel was known as Mont Tombe. In 708, the bishop of Avranches saw the archangel Saint-Michel appear three times, ordering him to build a church on the mountain. It wasn't until 966 that Benedictine monks built a pre-Romanesque abbey church. By the 12th century, 60 monks lived in the abbey church, and pilgrimages were numerous. The sacred site also housed numerous manuscripts. After several fires and lightning strikes, the abbey was rebuilt several times before the current Gothic structure was built. During the French Revolution, the monks were expelled and Mont Saint-Michel became a prison until 1863. At the end of the 19th century, the abbey was returned to its original vocation, and the spire on which the statue of the Archangel Saint-Michel stands was erected.
